Over the last 8 years, Austral has been involved with a benthic impact assessment project with the Australian Antarctic Division and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation.

Results of the study have shown that only 0.7% of the sea floor in the Heard Island toothfish fishery had some interaction with the fishing gear since the fishery opened in 1997.  Also, 98.5% of biodiversity on the seafloor remains undisturbed by commercial fishing.
