MINISTER FOR FISHERIES, SENATOR JOE LUDWIG, CONGRATULATES THE NORTHERN PRAWN FISHERY ON ATTAINING MSC SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION.

The following message was delivered to NPF EO Annie Jarrett yesterday from Senator Joe Ludwig at the NPF MSC launch at Taronga Zoo.

“I’m sorry I can’t be with you today at this important milestone for your industry. I am currently on a trade mission in South East Asia, but wish you the very best for the day in Sydney.

I would like to congratulate the Northern Prawn Fishery on achieving Marine Stewardship Council certification. The Northern Prawn Fishery’s success in achieving this certification demonstrates that the fishery is well managed by responsible stewards.

The Gillard Government is committed to working with the seafood industry to ensure that our fisheries are some of the best in the world. When it comes to buying fish from a well-managed and sustainable fishery, I always say that Australian fish are the best buy. Today’s certification affirms that again.

The certification of the Northern Prawn Fishery is testament to industry’s commitment to sustainability.

The partnership between the Northern Prawn Fishery, the World Wildlife Fund and Woolworths is a terrific example of how the seafood industry, retailers and NGOs can work together to achieve globally recognised sustainable fisheries.

The operators in the Northern Prawn Fishery can now proudly label their product with the MSC blue tick logo and I applaud the responsible approach they have taken to operating their fishery.

Congratulations to all those involved in this fantastic achievement.”
