Austral Fisheries Attend Premiere of Sea Shepherd’s Untrashing Djulpan
September 06, 2019

Team members from Austral Fisheries had the pleasure of attending Thursday night’s premiere of the latest documentary from Sea Shepherd, ‘Untrashing Djulpan.’

The film follows Sea Shepherd volunteers who travelled to the remote Djulpan beach, an isolated region in the Northern Territory’s North East Arnhem Land, far from any town or city. Here they joined forces with the Dhimurru indigenous rangers to tackle the monumental task of removing vast amounts of marine and plastic debris from Djulpan’s coastline.

Sea Shepherd Australia’s CEO Jeff Hansen welcomed the nearly 150 strong audience, which included special guest and Noongar Elder Uncle Ben Taylor who performed Welcome To Country, as well as Lirrpiya Mununggurr & Yama Banu from Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation, who both travelled to Perth for the premiere.

Jeff kindly acknowledged Austral Fisheries’ contribution to the Djulpan beach clean-up project and dedicated the documentary to the memory of Ryan Donoghue.

Djulpan is a culturally significant place for the Yolngu people and an important nesting ground for turtles.

However, for the past decade, the Dhimurru rangers have been faced with an increasing tide of plastic pollution arriving on their coastline.

Austral Fisheries would like to acknowledge the tireless work of Sea Shepherd, the Dhimurru indigenous rangers and all the volunteers who continue to tackle and raise awareness of global issues such as marine and plastic debris.

A story covering the documentary will be airing on Channel 10 News First at 5pm on Sunday the 8th of September. This will then be shared on Tenplay and on Facebook 10 News First.
