Shelling Prawns

We see the shelling of a prawn as somewhat of an art form. It takes a touch of technique and a couple rounds of practice before it becomes easy to do. At Austral Fisheries, we have taken a great pleasure in perfecting it. In all our years of fishing, we think we have come up with an easy and efficient shelling technique that we would love to share it with you.

What’s Your Prawn of Choice?

Although there are only a few steps to peeling a prawn, each one is important, but none so much as the first. The first step, and possibly the most challenging, is to select the best-looking prawn before anyone else can get there. This requires a quick wit and fast hands; this might take years to hone. Once this is achieved, then it gets easier.
When you are making your choice, you should go for any prawns that look bright and shiny, and not slimy. Once you pick it up it should feel firm in your hand. Lastly, if it smells like the ocean then you know you are onto a good thing.

Off with its Shell!

Once you have made your selection, take hold of the prawn’s body in one hand and the head in the other, then twist. The head should come off easily. You can dispose of the head.
Take your free hand and pinch as many legs as you can between your thumb and index finger. Using your other hand, begin to peel under and away from you, this will remove a large portion of the shell and legs.

The last step is to remove the tail. To do this, simply pinch and pull slightly. This should come off easily. You will then be left with a delicious, ready-to-eat prawn.
